Asia-Pacific Conference aims at sustainable development: Sec-Gen

The Secretary General of the second Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Housing and Urban Development said on Wednesday that the conference aimed at achieving sustainable development.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Manouchehr Khajeh-Dalouei said that the major objectives of the second APMCHUD are to attain the sustainable development and to avoid living in shanty homes and providing financial resources for housing and preventing natural disasters as well.

The secretary general also added that the APMCHUD has made considerable successes thanks to regional cooperation between the member states compared with the first session held in India.

To achieve the main aim of the conference, sustainable development, the member states have proposed a draft of resolution on the conference, Khjaeh-Dalouei added.

If the member countries give their seal of approval to the resolution, it will be declared in the world urban assembly in China, Khajeh-Dalouei added.

In addition, maintaining historical and religious identity in facing with some challenges to sustainable development would be great achievement to the conference, he added.

He also gave examples of the challenges as building uninhabitable places, increasingly urbanization and social deprivation and inequality.

He, at the end, said that Iran will hold presidency of the conference by next two years to implement the resolution.

The second three-day Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Housing and Urban Development opened after expert level meetings held over the past few days.
