Pakistani soldier dies in militants' attack: army

Islamabad, May 8, IRNA

Pakistan-Attack
A Pakistani soldier was killed when suspected militants opened fire at a security check post in the country's restive Swat valley in northwest on Thursday, the army said.

Another soldier from the paramilitary Frontier Corps was also injured in the attack at the post, established at a police station, an army statement said.

Militants are active in Swat valley and regularly launch attacks on the army and police as well as security check posts.

Thousands of troops have been deployed in the area to crush the militants, led by Maulana Fazalullah.

"Unknown miscreants conducted a fire raid at Kabbal Police Station. Resultantly, one Frontier Corps personnel embraced Shahadat and one personnel of Frontier Corps sustained injury while performing guard duties at the nearby Frontier Corps Check Post," it said.

The army said that the police defused a roadside 10 kilogram bomb near the town of Kanju in Swat.

Militants have resumed their attacks against the security forces after the Pakistani Taliban ended peace talks with the government last week.

The new government of Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has announced in his first policy statement last month that his government will hold dialogue with the militants if they lay down arms.

Taliban had first welcomed and started dialogue with the government through mediators but later ended the talks, saying the army has refused to withdraw from the tribal regions and Swat valley.

In another development a mentally sick man entered a girls school in a small town in Swat valley, creating panic among the students and parents that he is a suicide bomber and want to blow up the school.

A large number of police rushed to the school at Shakardara village to arrest the man. But when he was arrested they found that he was mentally disturbed.

Suspected militants have burnt two girls schools in Swat over the past three days, as part of their campaign against girls education in the area.
