Berlin urges Myanmar gov't to provide better access for int'l aid to cyclone victims

Berlin, May 7, IRNA

Germany-Myanmar-Cyclone
The German government here Wednesday called on the Burmese military junta to allow greater access to international relief organizations in their desperate attempts to help tens of thousands of victims of Cyclone Nargis.

Speaking at a routine press briefing, German Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Jaeger urged the Myanmar government to ensure "better access and more flexibility" towards international aid workers.

He stressed that prospects for conducting relief operation were not the way they should be.

Jaeger's remarks were echoed by German government spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm who said, "The (Burmese) population needs quickly international help."
The extent of international help cannot be conceived yet, Wilhelm added.

Germany has also doubled its emergency aid for the victims of Cyclone Nargis to reach one million euros.

The cyclone killed at least 22,000 people in Myanmar and was the worst catastrophe since the devastating tsunami of December 2004.
