Pakistan-Judges
A resolution will be tabled in the parliament on May 12 to restore top judges, who were deposed by President Pervez Musharraf in November, a senior leader of the ruling coalition said Friday.
Former Prime Minister and leader of the PML-N party Nawaz Sharif told his party leaders that he and leader of the Peoples Party leader Asif Ali Zardari have agreed to restore the judges through a parliamentary resolution.
Sharif and Zardari reached the agreement in their three-day talks in Dubai to remove differences over the fate of deposed judges to save the ruling coalition.
"We have agreed to table the resolution on May 12," Sharif said.
Sources said that the Prime Minister will also issue an executive order to restore the judges after the parliament passed the resolution.
President Pervez Musharraf deposed the Chief Justice and around 60 judges when he imposed emergency rule on November 3rd.
Sharif and Zardari had announced on March 30th to restore the judges within a month through a parliamentary resolution. But Zardari, who succeeded his late wife Benazir Bhutto as head of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), was reluctant to restore the judges under his previous commitment.
Differences had put the coalition at risk but Sharif's statement has dispelled the impression about the risk to the coalition.
The 30day deadline for the restoration of judges expired and Mr Sharif had to dash to Dubai to meet Zardari to find out solution to the issue.
Zardari went to Dubai last week to meet his daughters, but his departure had created doubts over his commitment to restore the judges.
PML-N leaders had indicated they will quit the cabinet if they failed to restore the judges.
A committee of senior legal experts was formed to draft a resolution to restore the judges, Sharif told his party leaders.
