Indian PM greets new Russian president

India's Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh felicitated the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on assuming office on Wednesday.

In a letter of felicitations, Dr Singh wished President Medvedev every success in his high responsibilities.

The PM stated that India draws immense satisfaction from its strategic partnership with Russia and added that this partnership is based on deep mutual trust, warm people-to-people bonds and longstanding multi-faceted cooperation.

He said relations with Russia occupy a special priority in India's foreign policy. In accordance with the successful practice of bilateral summits between India and Russia, the prime minister has also extended an invitation to President Medvedev to visit India.

Earlier, Medvedev was sworn in as the new President of Russia.

Medvedev, 42, who won a landslide victory in the March elections, became Russia's third president since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Vladimir Putin, who handed over the power to Medvedev will be confirmed as Prime Minister on Thursday. Putin, was barred by the constitution to run for a third consecutive term in the March polls.
