The Indian National Congress party on Tuesday condemned any 'unilateral military action' against Iran.

"Talk of military options and pre-emptive strikes should be avoided by all parties to avoid vitiating the atmosphere for dialogue," Congress General Secretary M Veerappa Moily told reporters in New Delhi.

"There are no military solutions to the complex geo-political issues and problems that afflict the West Asian region," he said.

The Congress, which recalled India's "civilizational links" with Tehran, called for dialogue and discourse to resolve the problems facing the region.

Meanwhile, expressing grave concern at the reported US statements threatening use of force against Iran, the Indian government on Monday said, "India is against any such military attack, which constitutes unacceptable international behavior.

"There is no military solution to the issues that are being discussed between Iran and the international community. A military strike on Iran would have disastrous consequences for the entire region," said Navtej Sarna, spokesperson, Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi while commenting on reports that US President George W Bush has given Israel a go-ahead to begin preparations for an attack on Iran if talks over Tehran's nuclear program fail to yield results.

Calling upon all concerned Governments to exercise restraint and choose the peaceful path of persuasion and negotiations, Sarna said, "India continues to support negotiations and diplomacy, rather than the threat or use of force".

The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), while welcoming the government's call to Israel and the US not to target Iran, Tuesday urged that New Delhi should call off its military ties with Tel Aviv if it had genuine concern for Iran.

"If the Manmohan Singh government is really concerned about the military attack on Iran, it should forthwith cancel the launch of two more satellites in this series. It should forthwith stop all military collaboration with Israel."
