Iran-ECOSOC-FM
Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said on Wednesday that failure of the international management system has led to the ongoing global economic problems.
The current problems of the world economy have prevented countries from achieving the goals of sustainable development including eradication of poverty, Mottaki said at the high-level meeting of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC).
He condemned performance of certain world powers in the aftermath of the Cold War era as the main cause of the existing crises in the world economy.
On political issues, Mottaki said, the international management ystem suffered a form of dictatorship and some restrictions on its decision-making process while on the economic field, it suffered injustice and a gap between the poor and the rich.
He added that after the collapse of the Eastern Bloc in late 1980s, hegemonic and ambitious policies of the world's big powers have resulted in the inability of international management system to establish peace and stability as well as to offer a clear prospect for the future.
The Iranian minister added those hegemonic and ambitious policies have also caused more problems for the world countries.
Referring to the existing international food crisis and the surge of oil price, Mottaki said that the two have resulted in interference of certain world powers in the internal affairs of oil-rich countries, meddling of supra-national companies in the world markets, increase of energy taxes in industrial states and dollar's devaluation.
Noting that the global economic and trade resources were controlled by one single power, Mottaki said, under the current circumstances, the poorest countries sustained the most damage.
Mottaki suggested members of the world community, including Iran, which intended to establish sustainable development, to adopt measures to set up a modern trade and economic system to achieve their goals.
He referred to cooperation among South-South countries and OPEC financial support for the less developed and developing countries as good examples of collaborating to settle monetary crisis.
The Iranian minister also urged the ECOSOC, as a main body of the United Nations, as well as other international organizations to spare no efforts to establish a new trade and economic system which would lead to a sustainable development.
