China ready to hold conditional talks with Dalai Lama, envoy

Tehran, May 5, IRNA

Iran-China-Tibet
Chinese Ambassador to Tehran Xie Xiaoyan said on Monday that Beijing is ready to hold conditional talks with the Tibet exiled leader Dalai Lama.

He told IRNA that if the Tibetan leader stops separatist activities and regards Tibet as an integral part of China and also encourages his followers to refrain from sabotage during Olympics Games, Chinese leaders will hold direct talks with him.

Continued contacts and holding political talks with Dalai Lama is mong "unchangeable" policies of Beijing, he said, adding that "In our views the doors to negotiations with him have always been open." Asked about unrest in the Tibet capital city of Lhasa, he said there are enough evidence which indicate that Dalai Lama's followers were engaged in such unrests resulting in many casualties.

Current unrests are parts of plots dubbed as "Self-Motivated Tibetan Movement" which is to trigger unrest in Tibet during the Olympics Games in order to destabilize the country, he said.

He strongly denounced Dalai Lama's claim that unrests which started on March 14 in Lhasa was totally peaceful.

The rioters killed 18 people and injured some 382 others besides setting ablaze 300 public places including seven schools, five hospitals and hundreds of shops as well as residential houses, he said.

The government of Tibetan autonomous region showed maximum restraint in dealing with rioters, he said, adding that no responsible government remains indifferent towards such offenses.

Dalai Lama tries to revive era of feudalism or slavery, he underlined.

Since 1959 Beijing Tibet has attained its social and economic development with assistance from China and the people in Tibet now have better standard of living than in the past and enjoy human rights, he said.
