India-Lankan Navy-Fishermen Killed
At least two fishermen were killed and one injured when the Sri Lankan navy allegedly opened fire on them after they apparently strayed into the waters of the island nation.
The fishermen, hailing from Arcot Thurai in Nagapattinam District, were fishing in the Gulf of Mannar on Friday night as the local fishermen in Ameswaram in Tamil Nadu were on strike protesting alleged detention of about 1000 fishermen by Sri Lankan navy on July 2 in Palk Straits, PTI reported here today.
Fisheries department officials said the fishermen may have been in the exclusive economic zone of Sri Lanka, leading to the firing incident.
Meanwhile, the fishermen, who were reportedly planning to call off the strike on Saturday, have decided to extend the strike by another week, condemning the killing.
The fishermen were on strike since July 4 demanding, among other things, that the Coast Guard provide them security when they fish in the Palk Straits in the wake of attacks allegedly by the Sri Lankan navy.
