Germany hosts the third highest number of foreign students across the world as around 250,000 foreign students are studying in Germany, the daily Der Tagesspiegel said in a report to be published Friday .

It quoted the the General Secretary of the German Academic Exchange Service Christian Bode as saying that the US and Britain topped the list of hosting foreign students.

Amid the positive news, Bode warned that the number of applications of foreign students were actually stagnating and the capacities of many universities were also limited in the wake of a growing number of German students who were being admitted to universities.

He pointed also to mounting efforts by other leading western countries to entice foreign students to study at their universities.

Some 12 percent of 2 million students in Germany are foreigners.

The share of female foreign students at German universities is around 50 percent.

Chinese students form the largest group of foreign students followed by students from Eastern Europe like Bulgaria, Poland, Russia with around 12,000 students each.

Most foreign students prefer reportedly to study at the Technical University in Berlin, the University of Munich or Heidelberg.

The field of study of major interest to foreign students includes business administration, computer science, mechanical and electronic engineering.
