Bhutan-King-Coronation
Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk will be coronated as Bhutan's fifth king on 6th November that will officially place him as the head of the country's constitutional democratic set-up.
"We, the Bhutanese, are indeed a truly blessed people," Prime Minister Jigme Y Thinley told reporters in Thimpu Wednesday, after announcing the date of the historic occasion, Indian official media reported.
"We look forward to the celebrations of the coronation, an event that will ensure the continued unity, harmony, and peace in our kingdom, usher in a new era that will further enhance our socio- economic prosperity, re-insure our political stability and reinforce our constitutional democracy," Thinley said.
"It will be an event that will radiate the creation of more opportunities for our people to pursue happiness through the goal of Gross National Happiness," he said.
The transition, according to the prime minister, symbolises the continuity of enlightened guidance from the 'golden throne'.
The coronation ceremony will take place at Tashichho Dzong, the main secretariat building which houses the throne room of the king and a summer residence of the central monk body, on 6th November.
Namgyal will grant an audience to the people in the afternoon at Tshechu Pang, the ceremonial ground.
This will be followed by another two days of celebrations at the Changlimithang stadium in Thimpu.
In 2006, former king Jigme Singye Wangchuk abdicated the throne in favour of Namgyel.
Since then Namgyal has been carrying responsibilities of the monarchy that saw Bhutan electing its first democratic government under Thinley and adopting the Constitution that confers power on the people.
