Germany-Football-Euro Cup
The Frankfurt-based German Football Federation (DFB) dismissed British press reports which claimed that the governing European football body UEFA had contacted Germany on a likely replacement of Ukraine as Poland's co-host at the 2012 European Cup.
"The have been no contacts whatsoever with UEFA on the issue and also no official request," DFB Secretary General Wolfgang Niersbach was quoted saying by the German sports media.
Meanwhile, DFB President Theo Zwanziger refused to react to press speculations on the topic of Euro 2012, saying his UEFA counterpart Michel Platini would make a proposal, if there were any complications.
The British Daily Telegraph newspaper reported Monday that Germany was a top front-runner to replace Ukraine as co-host for Euro 2012 in the wake of mounting concerns fears inside UEFA that the East European country would not be ready on time to stage the European football event.
UEFA has cast doubts over the uncertain political situation in Ukraine, delays to stadium construction and major infrastructure problems, the paper said.
As part of the emergency plan outlined by the Daily Telegraph, Poland would host most of the games along along with the eastern German cities of Berlin and Leipzig as well as Hamburg.
UEFA was expected to make a final decision at its two-day executive committee meeting, scheduled for September 25 in the French city of Bordeaux.
