Pakistan Senate Foreign Relations Committee chief welcomes Iran-U.S contact

Islamabad, July 19, IRNA

Pakistan-Senate Iran
Chairman of Pakistan's Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Mushahid Hussain Syed, on Saturday described as a 'good omen' contact between Iran and the United States.

Senior United States official was scheduled to take part for the first time in international talks with Iran over its controversial nuclear program.

The official, William Burns, was supposed to join envoys from the EU and permanent members of the UN Security Council.

The US and Iran have had no diplomatic relations since the 1979 Iranian Revolution and the hostage taking at the US embassy in Tehran.

"It is the first contact between Iran and the U.S after almost 30 years and the Islamic revolution. This is a good chance," Mushahid Hussain Syed said.

"The policy of flexibility will reduce tension in the region and will also avoid the danger of war," Hussain said.

"The Iran-US contact will help resolve disputes between the two countries," he told reporters in Islamabad.

He was of the opinion that the interaction will not only confine to the nuclear issue but it may also help in normalization of ties.

"I will not say that the contact will immediately lead to restoration of diplomatic ties but I am confident that the U.S will show flexibility and Iran would also come up with positive response," Hussain said.

He said the Iran-U.S interaction is very important in the sense that it will bury the regional hitches and will end possibility of war.

Formal contact between Iran and the U.S has been extremely limited, though last year they met at ambassadorial level to discuss security in Iraq.
