First Vice-President Parviz Davoudi on Tuesday congratulated Brian Cowen on his election as Irish new Prime Minister.

In his message, Davoudi also felicitated the Irish government and nation on electing the new premier.

"This election which is an indication to the confidence of the Irish people on you, is a precious support for moving in line with the aspiration of the Irish nation," Davoudi said in his message.

The Iranian official expressed hope that Tehran and Dublin would expand ties and consolidate constructive cooperation during the term in office of Prime Minister Cowen.

Brian Cowen took over from former premier Bertie Ahern this month.
