Quakes hit eastern Iran

Two earthquakes measuring 4.2 and 4.0 on the Richter scale shook the vicinity of Shahmirzad in Semnan province, eastern Iran, Wednesday evening.


According to the seismological base of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the first quake was registered at 20.26 hours local time (1556 GMT).

It was epicentered in an area measuring 53.19 degrees in longitude and 35.95 degrees in latitude, the report added.

The second quake was registered at 21.03 hours local time (1633 GMT).

It was epicentered in an area measuring 53.19 degrees in longitude and 35.93 degrees in latitude.

There are no reports of any casualty or damage to property caused by the quakes.

Iran is often hit by quakes of varying magnitudes as it sits on some of the world's most active seismic fault lines.
