Zimbabwe presidential results announced

Pretoria, May 3, IRNA

Zimbabwe-Election
Zimbabwe's long-awaited presidential election results have been released, with opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai defeating President Robert Mugabe, but not outright.

Results gave the Movement for Democratic Change leader 47.9 percent of the vote, with President Mugabe winning 43.2 percent. Even so, the MDC has rejected the figures, describing them as "rigged".

The announcement means, by law, a run-off election should be held within 21 days.

However, MDC leader Tsvangirai has not made clear whether he'll take part or not.

The long delay in releasing results had raised international concern of bloodshed in a country suffering economic ruin.
