Researchers of Amir-Kabir Industrial University of Tehran have successfully innovated a new type of cardiac pacemakers with long-lasting nuclear batteries, it was reported on Monday.

The Public Relations Office of the university said in a statement that the new pacemakers were developed by Amir-Kabir's physics experts.

The cardiac pacemaker, is a medical device which uses electrical impulses, delivered by electrodes containing the heart muscles, to regulate the heart beat.

The Iranian researchers decided to develop a new type of pacemakers with long-lasting batteries so that the batteries used in the present pacemakers last for 5-10 years.

Head of Amir-Kabir's new pacemaker innovating team, Masoumeh Mohammadian, said the nuclear battery used in the new pacemaker can properly operate for about 50 years and would not need to be recharged.

She added that the new pacemakers are currently in designing stage and would soon be produced exclusively for laboratory uses.
