Tragedy of human trafficking has roots in lack of religious values

Iran's permanent ambassador to the Vienna-based United Nations and other international organizations Ali-Asghar Soltaniyeh said on Thursday that the tragedy of human trafficking has roots in lack of religious values.


Soltanieh made the remark at the global forum on 'Campaign against Human Trafficking' launched in Vienna on February 13-15.

The global forum sponsored by the UN Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC) is currently studies effective campaign against the phenomenon at national, regional and international levels.

Soltanieh emphasized the need to consider the religious beliefs, values and the ethical principles to deal with the ugly phenomenon.

Some 1,200 experts and more than 100 representatives of the UN member states took part in the global forum.

UNODC, UNICEF, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) have taken part in the forum.

The Iranian envoy said that the phenomenon of human trafficking particularly of women and children is one of the worst kind of organized crimes at international level which requires international determination to fight.

The issue of sex abuse of women and children have accelerated the human trafficking, he said, adding that all governments, international organizations, NGOs, mass media, communities and religious bodies should share experiences and capabilities in fighting the global malady.

He noted that trafficking body-parts of human beings is another dilemma in the today's world, and that international determination can help cut such illegal acts.

Soltanieh called for identifying and uprooting the problems of being illiterate, jobless and the demand for low-income manpower in the developed countries and the growing sex abuse.
