Deputy Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) for Internal Security Affairs Mohammad Ja'fari said Wednesday that Iran needs nuclear energy to meet the growing demand for electricity, ruling out the perception that the nuclear program is luxury.

Addressing university students and professors, he stressed the importance of a replacement for fossil energy and finding renewable energy with respect to current limited resources.

"Western countries never thought Iranian scientists would successfully set up nuclear fuel cycle. They imposed pressure on Iran to make it stop the program after Tehran's access to the civilian technology," he said.

He added, "The Islamic Republic of Iran suspended its nuclear activities for two years for confidence building and a gesture of goodwill.

"After the West gave a disappointing response, the Iranian officials decided to resume the program designed to generate electricity."
The SNSC official stated, "The IAEA inspectors supervised all activities at Iran's nuclear power plants for three years but found no evidence of diversion from the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)." He noted that enemies mount pressure on Iran as much as it achieves more success in its goals.

"If enemies adopt any measure against Iran, we will have the same attitude."
