A car full of senior British diplomats has been attacked by illegal Jewish settler in the Israeli occupied West Bank town of Hebron, it was reported Thursday.
The diplomats were visiting from London and Brussels to assess the situation in the ancient city, where around 700 illegal Jewish settlers live under massive Israeli army and police protection amid some 180,000 Palestinians.
The attack came as British officials were being given a tour of the ancient city by Breaking the Silence, a British-funded organization of veteran Israeli soldiers that collects testimonies about the grim plight of the Palestinians, according to the Times.
The diplomats, who were traveling in an armoured car, were trying to leave the city through the large settlement of Kiryat Arba, when a settler's car pulled in front of them, blocking their way, a British diplomatic source told the London daily.
The car was reversed and tried to leave the scene, but a settler was said to have jumped in his car and pulled up again in front of them, thumping and kicking the vehicle, while another group of settlers refused to open the gates to Kiryat Arba.
The attack comes amid reports of leftwing activists facing increased Israeli pressure to stay out of the West Bank at a time when settler attacks on Palestinians are on the increase.
Nobody was reported injured, but the British diplomatic source was quoted saying that the UK regarded the attack as "a serious incident."
