Lufthansa ground and cabin personnel to begin unlimited strike Monday

Berlin, July 25, IRNA

Germany-Labor-Lufthansa
Passengers travelling with German airliner Lufthansa will face massive flight cancellations and delays as Lufthansa cabin and ground personnel will stage an unlimited labor walkout effective Monday, the weekly Der Spiegel news magazine reported Friday.

The strike over high pay for Lufthansa's 52,000 employees is to mainly affect German airports in Berlin, Frankfurt, Bremen, Duesseldorf, Hamburg, Hanover, Leipzig, Munich, Nuremberg and Stuttgart.

Labor demands include a 9.8 percent salary increase for the next year, while the employer side is only offering a two-phase wage hike of 6.7 percent as well as a one-time payment.

Lufthansa is reportedly preparing a detailed emergency plan to cope with the walkout in the peak of the summer travel season.

In recent weeks, Germany had also been the scene of repeated brief warning strikes by pilots working for Lufthansa's sister companies Cityline and Eurowings.

Hundreds of flights had to be cancelled, affecting tens of thousands of passengers at German airports.
