US attack on Pakistani tribal region will trigger anti-America sentiments

Islamabad, July 18, IRNA

US-Pakistan
Any US attack on Pakistan tribal region will trigger more anti-America sentiments in the region and the US cannot afford to indulge itself in another controversy as it has not yet succeeded in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Pakistani media quoted tribesmen as saying that they have seen movement of NATO troops across the Pak-Afghan border.

However, NATO spokesman James Appathurai, denied any unusual military activity in that region.

NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was not gathering at the border but we have permission to shoot into Pakistan if fired upon, he said.

Officials in Islamabad have said that Pakistan is not willing to support any such unilateral action by allied forces and an unauthorized attack on any Pakistani territory would be treated as an invasion.

Admiral Michael Mullen, US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in his recent visit to Pakistan said Pakistan needs to do more to stop the unimpeded flow of Taliban and other fighters into Afghanistan from safe havens in Pakistan.

He said that there is a real need to do something on the Pakistani side of the border to put pressure to bear the Taliban and some of these other violent groups.

Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) in Pakistan are bordered by Afghanistan and mainly Pashtun tribes that inhabit in the area are independent.

During the Afghan war period the area was used to be a training center for the Mujahideen.

Movement of men and material across the international border between Pakistan and Afghanistan was unregulated and several aspects of the FATA's culture have been influenced, and in some cases the traditions of tribal people were affected by the more conservative interpretation of Islam.

Public perception is as important as combating operations.

The differing approaches towards the FATA militants taken by Islamabad and Washington do not bode well for the future of their crucial military alliance.

In case of attack the government of Pakistan will have to face a strong reaction from its public who has always been against the United States polices about Pakistan.

The people of Pakistan are not considering the war against terrorism as their war.

Tanvir Ahmed Khan, former foreign secretary, talking to Pakistani media has said that the possibility of surgical strike always exists and the US may possibly resort to commando raids or air strikes.

He added that US cannot sustain their action in view of terrain and configurations of population.

Tariq Fatmi, former diplomat said that the situation in the area is alarming and rapidly deteriorating.

Allied forces have, so far, failed to stop Taliban infiltrations into Afghanistan, then how it will be possible for Pakistan to seize hundreds of kilometers long border with Afghanistan.

However, war in FATA will further deteriorate situation and would create more problem in the region.
