Poland slams Russian reaction on US missile shield

Berlin, July 11, IRNA

Germany-Poland-Russia
Warsaw has sharply criticized Russia's latest threats in the wake of US plans to deploy the controversial missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic, press reports said Wednesday.

The spokesman for Polish President Lech Kaczynski, Michal Kaminski, called the Russian reaction "inadmissible."
The Russian words are further proof that Poland has to boost its security and alliance with the US, the Polish official added.

Kaminski's remarks were echoed by the head of the Polish Parliament Bronislaw Komorowski who said that Russia's reactions confirmed the rightness of Polish demands for additional security guarantees.

Moscow warned late Tuesday that it would use a "military- technical" response to the US anti-missile system which Washington plans to station in Poland and the Czech Republic.

"If the agreement with the United States liable for ratification by the Czech parliament eventually becomes a law, and the deployment of US missile defence elements really starts in the direct proximity to our borders, we will have to use military-technical rather than diplomatic methods," a Russian Foreign Ministry statement said.

"There is no doubt that the deployment of US strategic weaponry close to the Russian territory may be used for weakening our deterring potential."
Obviously, Russia will have to take appropriate measures and compensate the forming potential threats to its national security.

"This is not our choice," the statement added.
