Germany-Poland-Energy
Poland is seriously contemplating to build atomic power plants in a bid to meet its growing energy needs and confront rising energy prices, press reports quoted the online site of the Polish Economic Ministry as saying Tuesday.
Almost 95 percent of Poland's electricity is generated by coal and brown coal since the East European country has no nuclear power facilities.
A final decision on the construction of new atomic power plants has yet to be made.
The Polish daily Polska reported Monday that the first atomic power plant would already go online in the year 2020.
A likely site for the atomic reactor would be the north Polish town of Zamowiec which was already a candidate to host a nuclear plant in the late 1980s but was forced to give up plans after strong environmental protests.
Last month, French President Nicolas Sarkozy had offered Poland his country's assistance in establishing a nuclear program.
