At least eight police personnel and eight civilian were killed and several others injured in a suicide bomb attack in the Federal capital on Sunday.
Those killed include seven police officials from Islamabad and three from Punjab Police.
The explosion which rocked the capital occurred just after the conclusion of Shuda Conference at Lal Masjid near Melody Chowk in the capital.
The conference was held in connection with the martyrdom of students who were killed in an operation just a year ago.
Reports said that the target of the explosion were police officials. They said a boy with explosive material blew himself up near a coffee shop in Melody Chowk where more than forty police officials were stationed.
Administration of Pakistan Institute of Medical Science said that six dead bodies and an injured woman were brought to the hospital.
More than thirty-five injured people were also shifted to Federal Services and eleven in CDA Hospitals.
Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani condemned the incident and ordered an immediate inquiry into the incident. He said stern action will be taken against those involved against this heinous crime.
Advisor for Interior Ministry Rehman Malik confirmed that eight police officials were killed and twenty three injured in the suicide bomb attack.
Rehman Malik while condemning the incident said that high alert has been declared in the capital. It said now it is the time the nation has to think to curb such type of incidents.
He said, "We would have to defeat the anti-Pakistan and anti-Islam element."
He said the suicide bomber was about 25/37 years old and the law enforcement authorities found his body without head.
To a question, he said it is premature to say who is responsible for the incident.
He said that some elements are trying to destabilize the country.
State of high alert was also declared in other parts of the country.
Inspector General of Police Sindh has ordered to check the suspected vehicles and people.
All entry points leading to National Stadium Karachi where Indian and Sri Lankan cricket teams are playing final match of Asian Cup, have been closed.
