German combat jets will patrol the skies over Austria and Switzerland during this summer's European Cup, the weekly Der Spiegel news magazine said in a report to hit the newsstands on Sunday.

The 2008 Euro Cup host nations made the official request for German air support because their flying squadrons have apparently not enough fighter jets on call.

While Austria does have Euro fighter planes, they have yet to be equipped with weapons.

According to security officials, sympathizers of the al-Qaeda network have threatened with terror attacks during the Euro Cup in Austria and Switzerland, slated to run from June 7 through June 29.
