US not ready to hold high-level talks with Iran: Ahmed Khan

Islamabad, July 24, IRNA

Iran-US-Pakistan
Former foreign secretary of Pakistan Tanvir Ahmed Khan said on Wednesday that certainly the US and Western powers were trying to establish some kind of working relationship with Iranian leadership but they were not ready for talks at higher level.

Iran is a major power in the region having rich recourses and no body can afford to have a deadlock in relations with such great power, the former Pakistani official told IRNA.

He added that the 1979 Islamic Revolution of Iran was a great event that had changed the entire course of history.

The US decades-long opposition to the the Islamic Revolution has led to great instability in the region, Ahmed Khan noted.

He added that a clear example of such hostility towards Iran was the Iraqi imposed war against the country in 1980s which lasted eight years (1980-1988).

However, referring to the recent developments in Iran-US relations, Ahmed Khan called them sa "favorable" noting, "These developments are welcoming sign and would have great impact on the region." He ruled out the possibility of any US-led attack on Iran.

It is only the Zionist regime that pressurized US for such an attack.

"I don't believe either of the states can afford such type of hostility", Ahmed Khan stated.

Stressing that war in the region would have a disastrous impact, he said, "people of Iran cannot be defeated."
Iran has repeatedly stressed that it is not after nuclear weapons but only wants to use nuclear energy to meet its energy requirements, Ahmed Khan stressed.

As for the Pakistan-Iran border situation, he said that both countries should work together and exchange information to control the infiltrations from either side.

He said it was possible that US was involved in encouraging some mischief at Pakistan-Iran border.

However, Ahmed Khan stressed that Pakistan must not allow any other country to use its soil for creating unrest in the region.
