Globalization threatening nations' identities

Tehran, July 8, IRNA

Iran-Minister-Globalization
Minister of Science, Research and Technology Mohammad Mehdi Zahedi said that globalization is targeting cultural identities of nations directly and indirectly.

Addressing the Third Nations Culture Festival and the 60th graduation ceremony of non-Iranian students at Sharif University of Technology, he also said, "We are duty-bound to safeguard our culture and not allow the phenomenon to destroy our national-Islamic culture." Islam attaches great significance to knowledge and science as the first verses revealed to Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) signify the issue, he said.

"We should conquer the peaks of science with self-confidence," the minister noted.

Zahedi also said that the West seeks to influence nations' customs and traditions and all should preserve their national-Islamic identities and traditions.

Of course, this does not mean opposing progress, rather acquiring science and technology along with safeguarding culture and identity will produce more desirable results, he said.

Meanwhile, Chancellor of Sharif University of Technology Sohrabipour said that the university admits non-Iranian students at bachelor, master and doctoral levels.

Some 320 non-Iranian students celebrated their graduation in the ceremony.
