Pakistan Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that President Pervez Musharraf, who had earlier cancelled a planned trip to China, will proceed to Beijing to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.
President Musharraf was scheduled to leave for Beijing on Wednesday at 10 a.m., had cancelled his visit due to the country's ruling coalition reportedly decided to impeach him.
The Foreign Ministry spokesman said that 'in view of our special relations with China, the president has decided to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics'.
"The president will now leave for China tomorrow (Thursday)," the spokesman said in response to a question, a ministry statement said.
The spokesman, Muhammad Sadiq had earlier said the president had cancelled his visit but had not given any no reason for the cancellation.
The Foreign ministry said last week that the president will visit China at the invitation of the Chinese Government to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics on August 8.
According to the spokesman the president will also hold meetings with the Chinese leadership including President Hu Jintao.
"Leaders from various countries have also confirmed their participation at the opening or closing ceremonies of the games and the president will have an opportunity to meet these leaders on the occasion," Sadiq had told the last week briefing.
The spokesman expressed the confidence that participation of the president in the mega event and his interaction with Chinese leaders will provide further impetus to our close and traditional ties with China.
