26 historical monuments in Sistan registered as national heritage

Another 26 historical monuments in Sistan were registered on national heritage list thanks to the efforts of Zabol Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Department.

Announcing this, head of the department Ali Reza Khosravi added that with the registration of these monuments, the most important of which are Zolfaqar and Mirjamal ancient mounds, the number of Sistan's registered monuments has risen to 468.

Zabol Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Department ranks fourth in the country in terms of registering historical monuments.

Some 868 monuments have so far been identified in the area, of which 468 have been registered on national heritage list, he said.

One third of Sistan Plain have been explored so as to draw up a comprehensive archaeological atlas for the region.

Since Sistan boasts of various historical monuments such as Shahr-e Sukhteh (Burnt City), Dahaneh Gholaman, Khajeh Mountain and dozens of valuable historical works with an antiquity of 3,500 to 5,000 years, it has been called paradise of archaeologists.
