Iranian students shine in Mathematical Olympiad

Iranian students ranked fifth in the 49th International Mathematical Olympiad, in Madrid, Spain.

The event was held from July 10-22.

A six-member Iranian team won one gold and five silver medals in the competition.

Mohammad Jahanshahi bagged gold and the other students won silver medals.

Iranian students attained the twelfth place the previous year.

The team will return Tehran on Wednesday.

Some 535 students from 104 countries participated in this scientific competition.

China, Russia and the US ranked first to third respectively.

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for high school students and is held annually in a different country.

The first IMO was held in 1959 in Romania with seven countries participating.

It has gradually expanded to over ninety countries from five continents.
